Badu Gili

The iconic Sydney Opera House challenged Yakkazoo to help them celebrate six First Nations artists using one of the sails of the Opera House as their canvas for a light projection.

With such a high profile project Yakkazoo needed to balance the integrity of the artists’ work and the reputation of the Opera House. What they developed delicately delivered on both. Badu Gili (meaning “water-light” in Gadigal language) is a dynamic light installation featuring the work of six First Nations artists whose ancient stories were projection-mapped onto the eastern Bennelong sail of the Sydney Opera House.

Yakkazoo produced Badu Gili in collaboration with curator Rhoda Roberts AO and artists Djambawa Marawili AM, Mervyn Rubuntja, Mabel Juli, Patricia Ansell Dodds, Penny Evans and Aiona Tala Gaidan. Our team created a visual storyline for the artist's unique artworks to become a holistic, visual and cultural experience, underpinned by an original soundscape by Damian Robinson.
